{ RAVENTAIL }
respected MEDICINE CAT of SHADOWCLAN, who now resides at TWENTY-FOUR MOONS.
REASON FOR NAME: at birth, Raventail's pelt looked entirely black to his exhausted mother, who proceeded to name him after the last prey she had hunted before being confined to the nursery. as he aged, it became apparent he was a dark black tabby, but his tail remained completely black, with no stripes.
+ HOW THE WORLD SEE'S ME +
a small, lithe tomcat with a dark tabby pelt, pure black tail, and green eyes.
+ HERE I AM, THIS IS ME. +
it is often quickly apparent to all those who meet him that Raventail is not the most sociable of cats. oh, he's certainly talkative enough, but when most of those words are murmured complaints concerning the irresponsibility of others, it tends to negate the effect. that isn't to say Raventail isn't capable of not being a grump, he is, but it's such a rare thing that most have given up on seeing it. it's just that he worries a little, y'know? kind of like those stereotypical skittish medicine cats that just worry constantly over their fellow clanmates. that's Raventail, essentially, except without the "skittish" part, because he is constantly worrying about his clanmates, and when they do stupid things like injure themselves or catch diseases he gets worried. after all, ShadowClan may not be as cute and cuddly and soft as ThunderClan, but they are still a clan, and it's Raventail's job to ensure they don't all die out before next New-Leaf. stressful job, really--it's hard to blame him for being as prickly as he is, sometimes.
still, while Raventail doesn't quite have such a thing as a "genial" side, he does have a softer streak, one that is mostly reserved for kits of certain personality archetypes, or for apprentices who have managed to retain that archetype. he harbours a warmer regard for undersized cats, too, and cats who are quietly determined without having the need to be obnoxious, and he appreciates hard work, and when warriors or apprentices go out of their way to provide him with something. he doesn't quite melt and profess his undying love, but he tends to be slightly less gruff with those cats. had he an apprentice, it is likely he would act much the same with them, and would be surprisingly patient working with them, though he'd occasionally snap if his nerves were running high.
+ THIS IS WHAT I'VE SEEN +
Raventail's life has always been edged with a certain... well, disregard. even the way he was named could be considered haphazard, his mother so tired from naming his two siblings that she literally called him after the last piece of prey she had hunted before being confined, grudgingly, to the nursery. he was the smallest of the litter, as well, which didn't help, as, as they got older, his two siblings tended to run off together and leave Raventail to watch them resentfully. he began to slink off and watch the current ShadowClan medicine cat at work, and sometimes the old medicine cat would give him small things to do, which young Raventail grudgingly appreciated, for it gave him something to do.
it wasn't a surprise to Raventail when he was asked to become the medicine cat apprentice, and it only took one look at his siblings as they tumbled around with each other, proclaiming themselves the fiercest warriors of ShadowClan, for him to say yes.
Raventail's apprenticeship under ShadowClan's ailing medicine cat wasn't a smooth ride by any means. the medicine cat had waited a long time to take on an apprentice, so long that cats were beginning to worry he would die before an apprentice was trained, and Raventail often had a hard time working under him, as the medicine cat, Cloudwhisker, was often rather absent-minded, trailing off in the middle of his sentences until Raventail would impatiently remind him, whereupon he would pick up immediately as if nothing had happened. still, though he groused inside at times, he was careful to pay attention to anything lucid Cloudwhisker imparted, and Raventail's natural quick wit and more retentive memory allowed him to quickly memorise the use of the herbs, and, more importantly, where they were found and stored.
his medicine cat name was granted to him four moons before Cloudwhisker died, and since then he has taken care of the ShadowClan cats.
+ A GLIMPSE OF HOW I INTERACT +
If there existed a cat who enjoyed talking to Raventail for prolonged periods of time, then Raventail thought, perhaps, that they had the patience of StarClan. Contrary to very popular belief, he was precisely aware of just how difficult he could be to deal with, but when it came to having the relatives of the afflicted hovering and preventing him from working, being difficult had proven to be the tried and true way of getting them to just leave, please, or I cannot guarantee he will come out in one piece this time around.
Besides, Raventail was left with little time to do anything else but run around supplying this and that to anxious queens or apprentices who pushed themselves too hard, or warriors who were just too stupid to stop hurting themselves for even three seconds. At this rate, he would have to go out and replenish his stock of cobwebs, a thought that made Raventail grumble in irritation, his ears flicking back against his head even as he pushed himself away from the herbs he had just finished stocking, letting out a breath of relief.
It was just a droplet in the ocean of things he had to do, of course, but it was at least one more droplet away from resting.
Carefully, Raventail picked his way to his nest, pale green eyes flickering towards the entrance of his den, where the light from the moon spilled in, cutting into the darkness of night. Two new warriors had been named earlier that day, and Raventail knew they would be sitting vigil tonight, keeping an eye on the camp, as dictated tradition. He still remembered when his siblings had been made warriors, before he had received his full medicine cat name. They had crowed about it for the entirety of that day, but come night that had sobered up hilarious amounts, their faces melting into serious masks that Raventail had thought out of place on their faces.
You were proud of them, though, Raventail, his subconscious whispered to him, and even as Raventail settled into his nest with a sigh, he knew it was the truth. He had been proud of them, ridiculously so, but he had also hoped that they would be worthy of their new names and responsibilities. They had good intentions, if stupid ways of going about things.
They're still learning, as are you, his mind cooed as Raventail's eyes slide shut, the waking world melting into darkness. As are you.
As were they all.
